My child…. I love her more than anyone, but when it comes to portrait sessions, I would take another kid any day. Maybe she is just too used to having my camera in her face. Or maybe she is just a stinker. Whatever. Grandma wants portraits for Christmas, grandma will get them.
No, really, we had a great time. She hammed it up for the camera a little more than I would have liked, and her hair was blowing everywhere, but she is mine, and I think they came out great. The Christmas band was playing next to the ice skating rink, so she did a lot of bootie shaking for the camera. Merry Christmas, Grandma!

So I am home on a rainy, cold day with Anna, my 61/2 year old daughter, who has a fever of 101. I have a little time on my hands to reflect on a seminar I attended recently hosted by PPA (Professional Protographers Of America). The speaker left me with a jumble of conflicting ideas. The key speaker shared his philosophy that john Q. public really just wants your basic, standard portraiture, with beautiful smiles and poses. I have always preferred the shots that show a glimpse into the world of the person, a blip in time. My walls are adorned with pictures of my daughter with food on her face, bed head, and her favorite pair of pajamas at any given moment. I cherish these more than the ones that she brings home from school every year. Is there a middle of the road? Anyone care to discuss?
Me trying to prove my point: pictured below, Anna today making Macaroni and Cheese, and Anna on an elevator this weekend in Wilmington wearing my leather jacket.

I keep thinking that I need to post more personal pictures on the blog. Because, in my mind, the off-the-job pictures are more of a statement who I (and Gina) really am. In a recent marketing seminar, the speaker was encouraging the audience to bring forward the person that’s behind the “business”. I couldn’t agree more with that. I guess the theory behind it is that a potential client has a better feel for who you are in the real world. Gina and I try to go places where “something’s happening” as much as we can (while raising kids, being a family etc.). Most of the time they are community events like SparkCon, the International Festival , and many times they coincide with a wedding shoot (Hey, I’m not complaining). I do enjoy these outings, because they give me a chance to play around with the (or new) photo equipment, there’s no time pressure, it’s all fun. These following pictures where taken at the last SparkCon Festival Downtown Raleigh (for last years SparkCon pics click here), right before it started raining and our daughter Anna was complaining about being cold, it was very windy and I believe it was the first cold day after the summer. I had a radio triggered speedlite with me, but since I didn’t pack a post (I was too lazy to haul it around) I just placed the flash on the ground for these few shots.
